Intensive English (ESL) Curriculum

English as a Second Language: What to Expect

The ESL program at SNHU features a variety of different approaches. Our goal is to help you learn the language in a fun and interesting way, which is why our program involves more than just classroom learning. Yes, you'll engage in academic studies, but you'll also engage in culture studies, theme-based learning, and even field trips outside the classroom. Through the ESL curriculum at SNHU, you'll be reading, writing, and speaking the language with ease.

The program will focus on several areas, including:

  • Academic Studies: Work to create effective study skills, library and research skills, time management skills, computer word processing and PowerPoint skills.
  • Culture Studies: Focused on adapting to life in the US, culture studies will help you learn about American values and beliefs, practice in cross-cultural communication, and learn communication training in survival skills.
  • English from Theme: Learn English by examining how language is used in a variety of different areas, including advertising, banking, business management, criminal justice, environmental studies, health, marketing, travel, and tourism.
  • Field Trips: Venture outside traditional classroom learning with visits to local agencies and businesses, guest speakers from the community, walking tours of the city/campus, and trips to local points of interests.
  • Grammar: By the end of the program, you'll have a thorough understanding of verbs, nouns, idioms, and more.
  • Reading: Build your English reading skills through real-life applications, like reading newspapers, magazines, textbooks, and more.
  • Speaking: Build confidence in your ability to speak English by giving student presentations, practicing your speech, pronunciation, and conversation skills, interviewing other students, engaging in role-playing activities, and participating in panel discussions.
  • Writing: Write business and personal letters, memos, essays, research papers, and more.
